Hydraulic Quick Disconnect Coupling

The hydraulic quick disconnect coupling is designed to allow separation from the flexible hose connecting a service vessel to an offshore installation. The coupling can be either remotely activated hydraulically or pulled apart in cases of extreme situations or failure of the hydraulic system. This feature provides an additional safety option.

The coupling is equipped with dual check valves, which seal fluid in both directions upon separation, preventing spill of pumped or produced fluids. During the separation process, the coupling maintains a seal against pressurized fluids until the coupling halves have spread far enough to allow check valve sealing to take place. A total fluid volume of 120 cc may be lost upon separation.

One half of the coupling body is fitted with four tie bolts which are secured to the mating coupling body with shear pins. The coupling body containing the tie bolts is also fitted with guide pins, which protrude through the mating and half insure parallel stability of the two halves during separation.

Energy required to implement the separation is provided by a control system comprised of an accumulator, a pneumatic poppit valve, and a hydraulic cylinder. The accumulator is precharged with nitrogen and then charged with oil. An air supply to the poppit valve, which is actuated in the control cabin, releases oil from the accumulator. This activates the hydraulic cylinder, which provides a measured volume of high pressure oil to the cylinder components within the coupling body, generating the force required for separation.

  • Maximum working pressure: 10,000 PSI
  • Test pressure: 15,000 PSI
  • Hydraulic or manual disconnect pull required for separation: 88,000 lbs
  • Designed for 2" or 3" ID high pressure hoses, full flow through the coupling, H2S service
